Water-Wise Landscaping: Fake Grass

When most people think of water saving tips, they tend to think of spending less time in the shower, fixing household leaks and planting in their yards drought-resistant plants. Installing an artificial lawn rarely comes to mind. What a few may realize is that landscape irrigation is estimated to account for nearly one-third of all residential water use; that’s more than 7 billion gallons of water per day, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Water conservation is an important matter. Yet, one of the biggest challenges for homeowners, landscape architects and gardeners is creating a water-wise landscape without losing its aesthetic appeal. Over the last decade, homeowners have turned to synthetic turf grass as the solution to this problem.

Since it is not natural grass, synthetic grass does not need to be watered; however it still appears lush and healthy year-round. According to the Southern Nevada Water Authority, an average lawn in Las Vegas of about 1,800 square feet replaced by artificial grass wholesale could save 99,000 gallons of water each year. In addition to saving water each year, homeowners with fake grass lawns can also save money. The Southern Nevada Water Authority estimates that homeowners in Los Vegas can save about $400 a year while residents in Atlanta can save $715.
